Coronavirus cases in NSW could lead to limits on ‘high-risk’ activities - NEWS.com.au

Sending her state back into lockdown might not be on the cards for Gladys Berejiklian, but the NSW Premier will consider further restrictions on activities considered “high-risk” in a bid to further suppress COVID-19.

“We know what is safe, we know what is high-risk. There is definitely room for us to consider what else might be considered a high-risk activity and consider how we curtail some of that risk,” she said Wednesday during an address to the Committee for Economic Development of Australia.

“Because given what‘s occurred with the Victorian situation and the level of community transmission in NSW at this stage, then we should look at that.”

Ms Berejiklian announced earlier this week that a string of tough new measures on venues will come back into play as of 12:01am on Friday, as new coronavirus infections linked to pubs, clubs and casinos in Sydney steadily increase.

She also repeated comments she made earlier this week about NSW being able to eliminate coronavirus for good, calling the notion “very unrealistic”.

The Premier told ABC’s 7:30 on Tuesday that NSW “can’t afford to lockdown, reopen, lockdown, reopen” every time “we have an outbreak”.

“That’s no way to live or to be able to instil confidence to businesses to keep employing people,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“I think suppression is our only option,” Ms Berejiklian said yesterday.

“Whilst we would all love to adopt a policy of elimination it‘s, I think, unrealistic to assume we would get there – in fact, very unrealistic. Suppression is definitely the right strategy for a population the size of ours.”

What is important for the state, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said, is for residents to stay vigilant as the number of cases rise.

“We are still effectively in a war zone,” he said.

The fact that some NSW residents would continue to disregard public health orders and social distancing measures meant elimination wasn’t a viable strategy, Ms Berejiklian said.

“When you can’t guarantee that 100 per cent compliance, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – and I don’t know anyone who will claim that they can – we can’t claim to go towards elimination, so we have to go towards suppression.”
