The tireless work inside Intensive Care Units

Behind the masks, face shields and disposable aprons, it is impossible to see how exhausted the intensive care nurses and physicians are at Footscray Hospital.

"It makes you tired wearing all of this gear all day," research nurse Sam Bates told 7.30.

"I get headaches from wearing this mask and head gear.

"But you're often so busy working that you don't even realise how much it is starting to affect you physically."

Ms Bates isn't complaining, she is just being honest.

Staff here rarely complain, even after working 12 hour days - usually longer.

"When you do get a break you are usually by yourself because we have to self-isolate from each other," physician and deputy ICU head Dr Forbes McGain said.

"Then you go home and you just hope the family doesn't get COVID from you."

On the night 7.30 visited Footscray Hospital in Melbourne's west, intensive care nurses and physicians had three patients, and a fourth "sCOVID" patient - suspected COVID.

"This patient is critically unwell, he is being ventilated as you can see," Dr McGain said, indicating an elderly man.

"He's stable, but certainly without this ventilation it would be a serious situation."
