AFL streaker at Optus Stadium Jesse Hayen breaks silence after $50k hangover - NEWS.com.au

The Perth pitch invader that brought a brief halt to Thursday night’s footy clash between Geelong and Collingwood has spoken publicly for the first time to reveal he doesn’t regret streaking across Optus Stadium.

The shirtless pitch invader hopped the fence in the fourth quarter of the Magpies’ 8.9 (57) to 5.5 (35) win in Perth before being dragged off by security.

It emerged on Friday that the Victorian man, identified by Channel 7 as Jesse Hayen, is facing a potential $50,000 fine for the incident.

Despite widespread condemnation because of the serious nature of the way he allegedly endangered security staff under strict social distancing rules, Hayen on Friday said his streaking run remains “pretty funny”.

“A lot of the boys think it’s pretty funny and all that,” Hayen said.

“I guess it is pretty funny, but, yeah, na, I feel like a bit of a goose.”

Channel 9 also reported Hayen has apologised for the breach and claims he does not have enough money to pay the potential $50,000 fine.

The report claims Hayen is asking for donations from the public to help him pay.

Perth Now reported on Friday Hayen is a concreter by trade and the 28-year-old only moved to Perth five weeks ago.

“I wasn’t aware of the COVID restrictions on the field when I did it,” he said the website.

“I was only notified after the fact. People run out on the field all the time. I did it. I’m probably going to be hit with a pretty hefty fine and something other things.”

He is also banned from Optus Stadium for three years.

More than 22,000 fans turned up to the game at Optus Stadium and it could prove to be a very costly night out for Hayen, who will face court next Friday after being charged with failing to comply with direction under the State Emergency Act.

He will also need to self-isolate for two weeks.

The playing area was deemed a quarantine zone because of the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning the man is facing a much harsher penalty than would normally apply.

He charged onto the field — still wearing trousers and shoes — with a couple of minutes left in the match but only made it about 30m before being tackled by security guards wearing gloves and face masks.

The West Australian reports the man tried to take his pants off as security took him inside the stadium.

The publication also reports he has been charged by police and is facing possible jail time.

West Australia’s phase four restrictions allowed for a maximum of 30,000 supporters to attend the footy last night — half of Optus Stadium’s full capacity.

Fans were not allowed to sit in the first two rows, every second row was left empty and not even broadcasters were allowed on the field as strict social distancing measures were enforced.

Last night’s crowd was the largest at an AFL game this season but not everyone was happy about it. A poll of almost 2000 WA nurses in the lead-up to the game found 94 per cent opposed the mass gathering, deeming it “too risky” following recent coronavirus spikes across the country.

Australian Nursing Federation Secretary Mark Olson said allowing a crowd of up to 30,000 was “clearly a risk” and his thoughts were echoed by the Australian Medical Association’s WA president Dr Andrew Miller, who described the event as a “huge gamble”.

“What we’re betting with is the health and livelihood of the whole of Western Australia,” he said.

Optus Stadium is expected to be at the full 30,000 limit when West Coast plays Fremantle in a local derby on Sunday afternoon.
