One person has been killed and five others injured in a major incident in Melbourne's CBD.
Police say a white Toyota sedan hit three pedestrians at a tram stop on Bourke Street before colliding with two other vehicles — a Hyundai and a Mazda — about 6:20pm.
The Hyundai driver was killed, while the two occupants of the Mazda have been taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Superintendent Zorka Dunstan said a 26-year-old man from Melton West was in custody.
"The good thing is that we had a quick arrest," she said.
"At this stage there's no terrorism link. We understand it's a person with mental health issues," she said.
Police closed Bourke Street from Swanston Street through to Exhibition Street.
ABC reporter Nicole Asher was passing through the CBD and saw multiple people being treated by paramedics and being put into ambulances.
"The whole corner was shut down and people were being directed away from the scene," Asher said.
"Then at the corner of Russell and Bourke streets there were two cars that were smashed.
She said there was a white sedan and a dark-coloured car which was "high-speed kind of smashed".
"It seems to me that someone went up the tram lane at speed," she said.
