A contractor allegedly responsible for a gas mix-up at a Sydney hospital that caused the death of a newborn six years ago has faced court.
In July 2016, baby boy John Ghanem died after being ventilated with nitrous oxide - also known as laughing gas - from a port labelled "oxygen" at Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.
Hospital subcontractor Christopher Turner appeared in Bankstown Local Court today, which heard he "lied" when he signed off that the pipes had been tested.
Turner was arrested and charged with manslaughter by criminal negligence and causing grievous bodily harm by negligent act or omission this morning.
It will be alleged he failed to adhere to the Australia standards when certifying oxygen connections within the neonatal medical gas outlet at the hospital.
An inquest into John's death was held last year and Turner was fined over the fatal mix-up.
The matter was referred to the Office of Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) during the inquest for a review of the police brief of evidence.
The mix-up led to the death of newborn John, and left another baby with permanent brain damage.
The second child and their parents cannot be identified for legal reasons.
Turner was granted bail on a $10,000 bond. He will be back in court in October.
