Live breaking news: Dylan Alcott named Australian of the Year; Australia Day marked with smoking ceremony; Federal Government considers new sanctions against Russia - 9News

People celebrating Australia Day today should remain vigilant against the Omicron threat, a top infectious diseases expert has warned.

Jane Halton, Chair of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness, told Today she was worried about a spike in COVID-19 cases from people gathering at Australia Day events.

"I think everyone should be worried," Professor Halton said.

"The truth is we know it's highly infectious and the closer everyone gets together, the more the likelihood that you'll be close to someone who has got COVID at the moment and therefore the greater the likelihood that you'll contract it."

She said the latest data shows a downturn in transmission in New South Wales and Victoria but that could be spoiled.

"We seem to look like we have come off the peak but we don't want another peak, courtesy of Australia Day."
