Police have confirmed the blaze ripping through Margaret River’s beloved forests was deliberately lit, as detectives put a call out for information.
Detectives from Strike Force Vulcan, WA’s bushfire and arson unit, joined local police in the investigation into the fire which has burnt through 5,500 ha of land.
According to a police statement released on Saturday, initial police assessments indicate the inferno was deliberately lit.
“Based on an initial assessment of the fire scene it is believed the fire was deliberately lit and may have been ignited near Mammoth Cave,” the statement said.
“Detectives would like to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity in the vicinity of Mammoth Cave on Wednesday December 8 or who has dash cam or mobile phone vision of people or vehicles in the area at the time.”
Mammoth Cave is accessed via Caves Road near the border of Boranup and Forest Grove suburbs.
Police are still yet to confirm whether the 40-year-old missing man, Jordan Marshall, is involved in the bushfire.
Mr Marshall has been missing since Wednesday morning with police holding serious concerns for the Fremantle real estate agent’s welfare.
Multiple sources told The West Australian Mr Marshall was captured on CCTV at the Mammoth Cave tourism attraction and was confronted by DBCA rangers however police and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attraction continue to decline to comment on whether he had a role in the blaze.
A new photograph and CCTV images of Mr Marshall was released by police on Friday which appear to show him in a dishevelled state with a Mohawk hairstyle.
Police previously stated on Friday that Mr Marshall was spotted in the Margaret River townsite on Thursday afternoon. But they now say that is not correct and that the last confirmed sighting of him was on the morning of December 8.
Volunteers said the missing man’s vehicle was burnt out in the bush.
Anyone with information regarding the bushfire is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and vision of suspicious activity in the area can be uploaded directly to Strike Force Vulcan via https://wapf.au.evidence.com/axon/citizen/public/margaret-river-region-bushfire.
Rewards are available for information that leads to the identification and conviction of an arsonist.
