Body found in Queensland floodwaters following police search - 9News

A body has been recovered from floodwaters at the Queensland town of Yalangur, near Toowoomba.

Emergency crews had been searching the area since earlier today after receiving reports of a submerged empty vehicle.

Police divers found a man's body around 4pm, hours into the coordinated search.

He was identified as a 73-year-old Roma man, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Investigations continue to determine the cause of the man's death.

Police and local firefighters were called to Yalangur around 8am where they found two vehicles trapped by heavy flooding.

The occupant of one car was located safe after climbing out of the flooded vehicle, however a second car was found empty and submerged in water, sparking concern.

The search is one of many flood-related incidents to devastate the state this morning, with two towns evacuated and more facing torrents of water.

QFES commissioner Greg Leach warned Queenslanders never to drive through floodwaters, adding it puts passengers in the car, and emergency services personnel at risk.

"We've been getting this message out for a long time and people still aren't taking heed, if it's flooded forget it," he said.

"It might look calm and shallow and you might have a powerful vehicle but the reality is it's dangerous to drive through waters. A modern motor vehicle can float in as little as 15 cm of water."

He added that a significant number of rescued had been undertaken in the last 24 hours, with 320 requests for assistance recorded by QFES.

"In the majority of rescues they've driven into floodwater and stalled or been washed away and they've been able to self evacuate. It still requires the attendance of emergency services.

"I think it's inexcusable that people drive into floodwaters putting not only their own lives but first responders at risk."
