Richmond, Virginia (AP) —Virginia’s crew couldn’t find a 134-year-old Timecapsule official who believed he was buried in the pedestal of the statue of General Robert E. Lee of the Confederate Army. Therefore, the all-day search was completed on Thursday. It towered over Richmond for over a century.
State officials planned to remove the 1887 time capsule from the pedestal the day after the giant statue was demolished. However, after removing more than half a dozen large and heavy stones, the crew could not find it.

The statue was released on Wednesday after Governor Ralph Northam ordered removal in June 2020 after protests against racism and police atrocities broke out nationwide following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. It was lifted from the pedestal.
The removal of the statue proceeded quickly and smoothly, but the search for time capsules was characterized by difficulty and frustration. The crew had to remove three separate pieces of foundation stone, each weighing 500 to 8,000 pounds (225 to 3,620 kilograms). They also removed the other five dozen large stones around the pedestal, allowing them to search for cornerstones and their surroundings.
After about 12 hours of work, the crew completed the day’s search, according to Northam’s Chief of Staff Clark Mercer. Workers will return on Friday to put the removed stones back in place and insert new time capsules into the foundation, Mercer said. He said it was doubtful that workers would start looking for 1887 time capsules, but left a small possibility.
“I’m sorry I can’t find the time capsule,” he said.
“We saw where we were thinking. It doesn’t prevent us from finding it in the future, but for now, the mystery will continue.”
Dale Branfield, a local historian and writer who has done extensive research on time capsules, quotes a newspaper article from the 1887 Consecration of the Consecration and is convinced that the capsule is somewhere on the pedestal. Said.

According to an 1887 newspaper article, copper time capsules mostly contain souvenirs, including a collection of US dollars and Confederate buttons. But one line of the article was intriguing to historians. Listed in the artifact is “a photo of Lincoln lying in a casket”.

Historian and Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer told The Associated Press earlier this year. He believes it is highly doubtful that the photo is an actual photo of Lincoln in a casket, as the only known photo of dead Lincoln was taken by city hall photographer Jeremiah Gurney in 1865.
