COVID live updates: Victoria records six new cases as NSW waits on numbers - ABC News

How has the transmission changed from last year's outbreaks?

"Through the Blackrock outbreak, the Holiday Inn outbreak, where we were able to trace those close contacts, we didn't see those numbers in the very casual or short-lived exchanges, they were overwhelmingly in work and home and prolonged contact situations," Professor Sutton said.

"Through wave 1 and wave 2, no, we didn't have that level of detail, so it's hard to say, but we know that these viruses, these variants of concern that we are dealing with now, are more transmissible.

"We know the secondary contact rate, the number of people within households, within workplaces who end up getting infected is much higher than the original wild type virus, so it is not surprising it is happening in casual settings."

Professor Sutton said, as an example, the Brighton Beach Hotel case was dining outdoors, "in a well ventilated, shaded but effectively ventilated setting, but nonetheless transmission has occurred," Professor Sutton said.

"We know that ventilation is a great risk mitigator, but it is not going to do the whole thing when you've got a really contagious variant."

Professor Sutton said he suspected that someone caught the virus two hours after an infectious case left an enclosed space.

"That's in the kind of measles category of infectiousness," Professor Sutton said.
