What's happening with the Australian Open?

Education Minister James Merlino says he's "absolutely confident" the Australian Open will go ahead.

He says there will be "stringent requirements" to ensure the safety of players and the community.

“Every single one” of the more than 1,200 players and staff will need to be tested before they can get on the plane, then will be required to be “rigorously” quarantined under “special arrangements”, Mr Foley added.

Addressing the case of three-time grand slam champion Andy Murray, who returned a positive COVID-19 test days before he was due to fly to Australia via a charter flight, Mr Foley said anyone who tests positive "is not able to be part of the program".

“We do know that two persons so far have been refused their approvals to be part of that program as a result of their negative tests not being up to scratch -- indeed they have been positive,” he said.

Mr Foley said Tennys Sandren was deemed not to be infectious and was instead shedding the virus after a previous infection.

“In regards to Mr Murray, we’ve been clear from the start, anyone who tests positive is not able to be part of the program coming into Melbourne and Australia.

“I understand Mr Murray’s organisation has released a statement indicating that he is quarantining at home in the United Kingdom. Mr Murray and the other 1, 240 people as part of the program need to demonstrate that if they’re coming to Melbourne they have returned a negative test, and then once they get here, they have to test rigorously every day and they need to be part of the 14-day quarantine program.

“So should Mr Murray arrive, which we’ve seen no indication that he will, he will be subject to those same rigorous arrangements as everyone else.”

The Australian Open numbers do not come under the current cap on international arrivals.
