New COVID-19 case numbers in WA have fallen by more than 1000 overnight, with two more historical deaths recorded.
WA Health reported 5351 cases on Sunday, down from 6566 the day prior.
It compares to the record 9754 new cases reported on March 30, just shy of the Chief Health Officer’s estimated peak of 10,000 daily infections.
While hospitalisations fell by two cases to 234, there are now 10 in intensive care, up from eight on Saturday.
The two deaths - a woman in her 90s and a man in his 60s - date back to April 4.
Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson has previously said hospitals aimed to report COVID deaths within 24 hours but it could take longer to determine whether the virus was the cause as opposed to other co-morbidities.
The latest bi-weekly data update showing how actual case numbers were tracking against modelling, released on Friday, showed hospitalisations and ICU admissions were well below expectations.
Opposition treasury spokesman Steve Thomas seized on the numbers to reiterate calls to ease restrictions further, convinced the peak had already been reached.
“Charting the new infections, hospitalisation and ICU rates and comparing that to the previous modelling now clearly demonstrates that the peak of this wave has been reached, and the Premier now has no excuse not to tell us how and when he will ease the burden on the community,” he said.
“I accept that there remains some uncertainty, and that there may be future waves of new variants or even new viruses, but we can’t stay under restrictions forever waiting in case something changes in the future.
“If the situation changes, the state will respond as we have now well proven we can.”
Announcing the easing of restrictions from Level 2 to Level 1 from March 31, the McGowan government advised the 500 patron limit for licensed hospitality venues would last for two weeks only, ceasing on April 14.
There are currently 43,991 active cases in WA.
