Victoria's Code Brown lifts as COVID-19 case numbers slowly drop off - 9News

Victoria's Code Brown health alert has come to an end, allowing the state's hospital system to largely return to normal functioning as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to fall.

Victoria has recorded 7104 new cases of the virus overnight and a further two deaths, after 7223 new COVID-19 cases and 18 deaths were recorded yesterday,

The emergency measures ordered under the state's Code Brown have ceased in Victorian hospitals today after almost a month.

Restrictions on elective surgery have also eased today, allowing private hospitals to perform up to 50 per cent of all elective surgery in metropolitan Melbourne and up to 75 per cent of all elective surgery in regional areas.

Public hospitals in regional Victoria are able to resume all category two elective surgery, dependent on workforce availability.

However, while the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Royal Eye and Ear Hospital are able to resume all category two procedures, other public hospitals in Melbourne are still unable to run elective surgery.

To help the state's overwhelmed hospital system cope with the high number of COVID-19 cases, restrictions on elective surgery began in early January and the Code Brown was brought in on January 19.
