‘Catastrophic injuries’: Swimmer dies after shark attack at Sydney beach - Sydney Morning Herald

A swimmer has died after being attacked by a shark at a Sydney beach on Wednesday afternoon.

Police received reports someone had been taken by a shark at Buchan Point, near Little Bay, about 4.30pm.

Police and surf lifesavers attended and located human remains in the water.

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said paramedics responded to reports of a shark attack.

"Unfortunately this person had suffered catastrophic injuries and there wasn’t a lot paramedics could do when we arrived," she said.

It is the first fatality from a shark attack in Sydney since 1963.

Fisherman Kris Linto told Nine News he saw a 4½-metre great white shark attack a swimmer.

"The shark came and attacked them vertically," he said.

"We heard a yell and then turned around. [The splash] looked like a car just landed in the water."

In a graphic video that the Herald has chosen not to publish, the attack appears to occur in choppy water only metres from the rocks.

Panicked witnesses can be heard shouting as the shark thrashes in the water.

A bystander who was playing golf nearby said he witnessed “lots of boats and jet-skis” responding on the water.

He said two helicopters were circling overhead.

Local resident Ernesto said he had been keen to go for a swim this afternoon, but had got distracted.

When he heard about the attack, he got goosebumps.“I haven’t seen sharks [here before],” he said.

Ernesto said the shark attack would deter him from swimming for the next little while.

“It’s a tight knit community,” he said.

Randwick mayor Dylan Parker was among those gathered at the beach on Wednesday night.

"This is horrifying news that we’ve had a fatal shark attack on our coast," he said.

Little Bay Beach has been closed while police search the area.

Police will work with the Department of Primary Industry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of the swimmer. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

More to come.
