Victorian COVID-19 hospitalisations at 281 as 15 deaths and 5,874 cases reported - ABC News

Victoria has reported a further 15 COVID-19 deaths, as eased restrictions come into place on masks and working from home.

There are 281 COVID-19 patients in Victorian hospitals, an decrease on the 301 reported on Friday.

There are 43 patients in ICU, five of whom are on ventilators.

The state has recorded 5,874 new cases, taking the total number of active infections to 40,968.

That is a decrease on the 41,125 active cases in the state on Friday.

Today's results were mostly recorded using rapid antigen tests, with 3,788 positive results coming from the at-home testing kits, while 2,086 positive results were recorded using PCR tests.

Around one in eight PCR tests came back positive in the 24-hour reporting period.

Almost 94 per cent of Victorians aged 12 and older have received at least two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, and 58.1 per cent of adults have received three doses.

Overnight, the state's restrictions eased, meaning masks are no longer mandatory in most indoor settings and the government's work-from-home recommendation has ended.

Masks are still required indoors at primary schools for students in grades three to six, for staff in retail and hospitality, for people on public transport, in taxis and rideshares, for staff and visitors in child care, and in health settings and care facilities.

Victorian health authorities also "strongly recommend" masks be worn when spending time with people who are vulnerable to COVID-19, and also be worn anybody working in customer-facing jobs.

Meanwhile, the number of international students in Victoria is slowly increasing after being decimated by the pandemic.

Data from the City of Melbourne shows that during the past two months, the number of international students has increased by more than 16,000, but was still down by 44 per cent on pre-COVID levels.

More than 150,000 international students lived in Victoria before the pandemic, contributing $13.7 billion a year to the state's economy.
