Two Palestinian fugitives were captured in Nazareth on Friday, days into a manhunt that began after they escaped from a maximum security Israeli prison along with four others.

Islamic Jihad members Mahmoud Aradeh and Yakub Kadari were caught after civilians spotted two suspicious figures and reported them to the police. The two were taken for questioning by the Shin Bet security services. They did not resist arrest. Aradeh is believed to be the one who planned the escape from Gilboa Prison.

Zakaria Zubeidi, a former Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade leader and the most prominent of the escapees, has not been captured.

Zakaria Zubeidi

The 45-year-old is the most well-known inmate of the six. Zubeidi was behind the 2002 attack in the Likud branch in Beit She’an, in which six people were killed – as well as other cases. Zubeidi is a former commander of the Fatah’s  Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade in the Jenin area. He was arrested in 2019 on suspicion of involvement of shootings in Beit El. Zubeidi was considered to be one of the most wanted men in the West Bank for many years: he lost his brother and mother in confrontations with the IDF and his house in Jenin was demolished.  He previously said in an interview that he views terrorist attacks as the only way to confront Israel’s military supremacy.

Iham Kamamji

The 35-year-old resident of Kafr Dan in the Jenin Governorate was arrested in 2006 and sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering Eliyahu Asheri.

Kamamji, a member of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, kidnapped 18-year-old Asheri from a hitchhiking station at the entrance to the settlement of Ofra in the West Bank. He shot Asheri in the head, then buried him in a cistern. The body was found in the al-Tira neighborhood in western Ramallah. Kamamji was also convicted of planning to carry out a huge suicide bombing attack using a car wired with nearly 100 kilograms of explosives.

Yakub Kadari

The 49-year-old from the village of Bir al-Basha in the Jenin Governorate was convicted of planning and committing several attacks against Israelis as well as being a member of the military arm of the Islamic Jihad. He was imprisoned in 2003, and sentenced to two life sentences plus 35 years.

Mahmoud Aradeh

The 46-year-old resident of Arraba in the Jenin Governorate is considered to be a senior figure in the Islamic Jihad’s military arm. He was arrested in 1996, convicted of carrying out attacks against Israelis and sentenced to life in prison.

Mohammed Aradeh

The 39-year-old, also from Arraba, was arrested in 2002 and was sentenced to three life sentences plus 20 years. He was a member of the Islamic Jihad's military wing in which he planned and carried out other terrorist attacks against Israelis. He had been in prison for 19 years before his escape.

Monadal Infiat

A 26-year-old resident of Yabed in the Jenin Governorate. Infiat has been in prison for the past two years. He is also a member of the Islamic Jihad.

The arrests came after civilians in Nazareth told the police that two Palestinians came to their home, asking for food. This aroused the officers' suspicion, and they started searching the area until capturing the two escapees. Police are investigating whether the two received help after their made their escape. 

The civilians told the police they are afraid for their lives after the fugitives were caught.  

Police believe that the four remaining prisoners are no longer in Israel territory. Israeli intelligence officials have previously said they thought at least some of the fugitives had managed to enter the West Bank.

Security prisoners who dug under a sink in cell number 5 in wing 2 of Gilboa Prison discovered an open space between the floor and the foundation. They continued digging until they passed under the prison's walls.

Monday, September 6, 1:30-1:40 A.M.

The prisoners, several of whom were transferred to the cell that day, enter the tunnel and escape through it. The guard in the watchtower, which is directly above them, has fallen asleep.

1:49 A.M.

A taxi driver notifies the police that he saw several suspicious figures in dark clothes running across the road and hiding in the bushes.

1:58 A.M.

A police van arriving at a nearby gas station starts searching the area. An employee tells them that he also noticed a suspicious figure, but it’s unclear whether this is connected.

2:14 A.M.

The deputy commander of the Beit She’an Police Station notifies the Prison Service that they suspect the event is a prison break.

2:15 A.M.

The Prison Service is on the alert that there may have been an escape, and conducts a prisoner count.

3:29 A.M.

After the count, the Prison Service notifies the police about the escape of three prisoners.

4:00 A.M.

After viewing the surveillance footage, the Prison Service informs police that six prisoners have escaped.

Shortly after Friday's arrests, rocket sirens were heard in southern Israel. It was not immediately clear what triggered them.

Civilians later reported that security forces are deployed near the village of Muqeible near the green Line in the Jenin area.

The six fugitives escaped through a tunnel they dug from within their cell, apparently over the last six months. All the escaped convicts – five members of Islamic Jihad and one Fatah member – are residents of the Jenin area.

After the breakout on the night between Sunday and Monday, the conditions of 4,000 security prisoners were further restricted. Thus, the time they are allowed to be in the yard was reduced from four hours to one hour a day, and family visits have been canceled until the end of the month. 

Palestinian inmates affiliated with the Islamic Jihad movement clashed with guards and set cells in Ketziot Prison on fire on Wednesday, following a decision by the Prison Service to redistribute about 400 Islamic Jihad-affiliated prisoners in jails throughout Israel. 

The Prison Service reported that two cells in Rimon Prison were also set ablaze The riots.  

Visiting an area in Israel bordering the northern West Bank, Defense Minister Benny Gantz vowed on Friday to "lay our hands on the people who escaped from prison," operating for however long and wherever is needed to "restore security to this area."
