Concerns over vaccine hesitancy in Qld - NEWS.com.au

Queensland’s Premier has turned her attention to Australian truckies while vaccine hesitancy in one area has authorities concerned.

Queensland’s Premier has turned her attention to the vaccination of Australian truckies, after the state narrowly avoided another outbreak caused by an interstate driver.

Annastacia Palaszczuk on Monday said she was “a lot more comfortable” the latest threat had passed.

But she said more needed to be done to reduce vaccine hesitancy among the country’s truck drivers.

“I think we do need to have a good conversation with people about encouraging those freight drivers to get vaccinated,” she said.

National cabinet has called on transport ministers from each state and territory to come up with a framework for managing the Covid-19 threat posed by the large industry, which is exempted from border closures.

Ms Palaszczuk said all options should be on the table, but raised questions about the practicalities of some options, including the testing of every truck driver who crossed into Queensland.

“The problem with testing every truck driver that comes into the state is we have thousands, and you can imagine then the traffic jams that we would have,” she said.

The Premier also addressed the issue of vaccine hesitancy among people living in Logan, south of Brisbane.

“There’s more and more people getting vaccinated, which is wonderful, so I think the message is getting out there,” she said.

“People like the walk-ins so I think we need to look at how we facilitate that.”

Ms Palaszczuk said the government was working with the leaders of local multicultural communities to spread the word.

More than 38 per cent of Queenslanders are now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, with 146,182 administered by Queensland Health last week.
