Qld records three new local cases after new exposure sites listed, restrictions to ease - NEWS.com.au

Queensland has recorded three new locally acquired cases of Covid-19 as Sydney’s outbreak spreads to the Sunshine State.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said one of the new cases was a 12-year-old boy who had tested positive on returning to Queensland days after completing hotel quarantine in Sydney.

She said the father of the boy had also tested positive.

The boy, from Newport, travelled with his mum to the United States where they stayed in Los Angeles for three months before returning to Sydney on June 21.

They finished quarantine on July 5 before arriving back in Brisbane on July 9 on flight QF544.

Chief health officer Jeannette Young said health officials were certain the boy acquired the virus in Sydney but they weren’t sure if it was in hotel quarantine or in the community.

She said the boy became unwell the evening after they arrived back on July 9 and saw a doctor at the Aspley medical centre on Tuesday before returning a positive result on Wednesday afternoon.

She said his mum had so far tested negative but his dad, who works at a financial services firm in Maroochydore but did not travel to the US, was positive.

The dad attended work while infectious but at this stage it was believed they hadn’t been to any other exposure venues.

Dr Young said the boy stayed at home with his mum and didn’t go to school.

She said the third case was a fully vaccinated international airport worker.

The woman, who lives in Tarragindi and is aged in her 40s, was fully vaccinated with Pfizer back in March.

She became unwell on Tuesday evening and received a positive result on Wednesday.

“We are deeming her infectious from late on Sunday when she was at work at the Brisbane International Airport from 6pm through to 11.30pm,” Dr Young said.

Ms Palaszczuk said the new cases were a concern for authorities.

“We are treating that as three cases in the community and we are a little bit concerned about that,” she said.

The Premier on Wednesday extended the mask rules for 11 local government areas in Queensland’s southeast due to the positives cases.

“To avoid a lockdown, we just want to make sure we get on top of those cases and we want to make sure that we keep everybody safe,” she said.

The council areas are Brisbane City Council, Logan, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Redlands, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Noosa, Somerset, Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim.

“We won’t be able to ease our restrictions in the greater Brisbane area and I know people will be disappointed by that,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“But what we are seeing is that these outbreaks are happening across the country. We have seen what has happened in Victoria overnight with additional cases.”

The restrictions, including the mask mandate and dancing ban, were expected to ease at 6am on Friday but will now last for another seven days.

In Townsville, Palm and Magnetic islands, the mask restriction will be removed this Friday.

Queensland Health have also been alerted by South Korea that a case of Covid-19 had been infectious while in the community, resulting in an alert being issued for an Ipswich shopping centre.

“We had a Queenslander travel to South Korea and South Korea tests everyone on arrival and they notified Australia that one of the people they tested was positive and they had come from Queensland,” Dr Young said.

“We are just as a cautionary step notifying where that person was in case they acquired it here.”

She said she didn’t know yet if the man had acquired the virus in Queensland or elsewhere.

Two news cases were also recorded in hotel quarantine on Thursday – a person who returned from Kenya and another from India.

Queensland now has 50 active cases.
