COVID live updates: Queensland, NSW and Victoria hold press conferences after Brisbane lockdown ends - ABC News

VIC Deputy CHO Allen Cheng announces he has completed his secondment with the Department of Health

Those who have tuned into Victoria's press conferences during the pandemic will be familiar with Allen Cheng, who has been the Deputy Chief Health Officer for the past year.

He has this morning confirmed his secondment into the role is over and he will be returning to his usual roles at Alfred Health and Monash University.

He is also the co-chair of the vaccine advisory group ATAGI.

"The last few weeks across Australia have been a reminder that COVID isn't close to over yet, and I'm sure there will be many challenges to come as we navigate our way through the next stages of the pandemic," he said.

"But I'm happy that I'm leaving a Department that is much better equipped to handle what will come and will continue to improve how things are done."

Victoria's health department faced heavy criticism for its centralised and manual processes during the second wave last year, but has undergone a significant overhaul.

In a series of tweets, Professor Cheng said it had been "quite a learning curve" to join the public service, and thanked the "dedicated army of people who try to make things better for Victorians".

"Not everything goes to plan, but what matters is that we learn and that the system improves over time thanks to the tireless work of thousands of people," he said.
