Coronavirus NSW: Gladys Berejiklian slams party at Meriton Suites, Waterloo linked to new infections - NEWS.com.au

Frustrated Health Minister Brad Hazzard has given both barrels to Sydneysiders breaching public health orders, warning gatherings could extend the city’s lockdown.

NSW recorded 35 locally acquired cases of coronavirus overnight, with 24 of those in isolation throughout their infections periods and four in isolation for part of this period – however, seven were in the community with the virus.

Health Minister Hazzard was annoyed at hearing of gatherings of people across Sydney over the weekend and unleashed an almighty spray against the “entitled” group.

“When you hear of parties going on in the middle of a lockdown you have got to (wonder) what is the thinking of some of these people?” Mr Hazzard said.

“I would say that those people who are thinking that the rules are somehow not for them, that they are more entitled than the rest of us, you actually have to listen because you may be the people who spread this and keep us in lockdown for a lot longer than the rest of the community would like.”

NSW Health officials are looking into a gathering held after Sydney went into lockdown that has already produced multiple Covid-19 infections.

Three infections were attributed to a gathering at the Meriton Suites at Waterloo at 8pm on June 26 – two hours after stay-at-home restrictions came into effect.

“In relation to an event at 8pm on Saturday, 26 June at Meriton suites Waterloo, a gathering, we have three new cases linked to that,” NSW chief health officer Kerry Chant said on Monday.

“We are going to be looking intensively at that event and will provide some updated advice later today. We are reviewing the results from extensive testing around those cases overnight.”

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has not yet made a decision on extending Sydney’s lockdown but also said foolish behaviour could be the trigger for more stay-at-home measures.

Sydney’s beaches were packed with people over the weekend as beautiful weather enticed them outdoors, but Ms Berejiklian reminded everyone exercise was one of only a handful of reasons to leave the house.

It was also revealed 12 St George Illawarra Dragons NRL players were fined for breaching the state government’s stay-at-home order by attending a house party in Shellharbour on Saturday.

Sydney is in its second week of a 14-day lockdown, and residents await a decision from Ms Berejiklian on whether the government will extend it.

“I can say that the lockdown certainly has been effective in not doubling and tripling the figures that we were worried about,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“It has given our contact tracers the ability to maintain control over the virus, but what it has foreshadowed is that unfortunately when a small number of people do the wrong thing it does result in extra cases.

“I want to thank the vast majority of our citizens who have done absolutely the right thing.

“Unfortunately, having a party when you're not supposed to have a party is not doing the right thing, and we know that some of the cases today are a result of issues or result of incidents where people have done the wrong thing.”
