Jumbo-Visma's Primoz Roglic has maintained the lead of the General Classification at Itzulia Basque Country after the second stage.
The Slovenian started the stage -which featured two climbs of the third category, one of the second and one uphill finish- in the first position of the overall standings. The winner of the 2020 Vuelta a España managed to remain with the favourites throughout the day and even tried his luck but the reduced pack crossed the finish line together, 15 seconds after the winner of the stage Alex Aranburu.
"I’m happy that I still have the yellow jersey", Roglic said. "It was a very tough stage. In the beginning some rain, cold and sometimes the roads were very slippery. The race was full throttle all day.
"On the final climb I felt good and attacked. I was in the lead with a good group, but unfortunately we got caught. I feel good and I am glad I can compete with the best again."
One of the rider's main rivals, his fellow countryman Tadej Pogacar, won four seconds in the General Classification after crossing the finish line in the third position and now sits 24 seconds behind the Slovenian national champion.
