The Liberal MP who instigated the failed leadership spill on Tuesday has resigned from his shadow ministry portfolio, the Victorian Opposition has confirmed.
Brad Battin resigned from his ministry portfolio responsibilities after failing to topple Victorian Liberal Party leader Michael O’Brien in the leadership coup.
The party room on Tuesday rejected Mr Battin’s bid to take the top job from Mr O’Brien, with the motion being defeated 22 votes to nine.
It’s unknown whether any other MPs have resigned, but there are murmurs some face the prospect after the spill attempt.
Mr O’Brien was in discussions with MPs on Tuesday following the failed coup.
“We’ll make some adjustments to the front bench today and I’ll announce those when I’m ready,” Mr O’Brien told reporters.
“We’ll see how substantial that shuffle will need to be.”
Former Victorian Liberal Premier Jeff Kennett said there was a general dismay within the Party at what had occurred.
Speaking with NCA Newswire, Mr Kennett called the spill selfish and politically stupid.
“I think it was madness and I don’t understand it – I didn’t know it was going to happen,” he said.
“You don’t have a leadership challenge unless you’re going to win or get very close to achieving what you wanted, so it was grossly politically naive.
“It’s a good learning exercise for those who orchestrated the leadership challenge and failed.”
He said he anticipated the public would be looking at a completely new party by the time the state election rolled around in 2021.
“I have no doubt the party will go through a number of changes and that includes preselection – some will retire, some will be tapped on the shoulder,” Mr Kennett said.
“You’ll find not only a more relevant opposition, but the public understanding the need for change.”
Mr O’Brien said that they now needed to be a team.
“We will be making some adjustments to our frontbench team because we need to be a team,” he said.
“We need to be pointing in the same direction. We will be making adjustments and I will announce them when I am ready to.”
