- Residents were told stay indoors and one household was advised to relocate to the bathroom after smelling fire
- A 63-year-old man has been charged and is due to face Lismore Local Court on Monday
At about 9pm yesterday police from the Richmond district were called to an address in Dunoon, 20 kilometres north west of Lismore, amid reports a man was firing shots at a home on Rayward Road and another on Duncan Road.
Soon after their arrival, the situation escalated.
Police allege a 63-year-old local resident was firing at officers and a police vehicle "was peppered with bullets".
Richmond Police District Chief Inspector Susie Johnson said it was a blessing there were no serious injuries.
"Police went out there to protect the community," she said.
"They then became subject to being under fire themselves and had to exit the police vehicle where they took cover behind the car.
"I had one female constable who is to be commended, who maintained her composure, she took cover behind the footwell of the driver's seat and maintained contact with our radio communications," Inspector Johnson said.
Police fired a shot at the alleged shooter before retreating to a safe location where they waited for specialist units including negotiators and the dog unit.
Residents were told to stay indoors, with one household advised to relocate to the bathroom after reports they could smell fire.
Police allege more than 20 shots were fired during the incident.
The alleged shooter, who was known to police, was not in possession of a gun when he was arrested.
He has been charged with four counts of fire firearm at dwelling-house with disregard for safety, two counts of discharge firearm with intent to resist arrest, and two counts of fire firearm in or near public place.
He has been refused bail and will appear at Lismore Local Court tomorrow.
