NSW customer services minister Victor Dominello has revealed almost 70 Local Government Areas from Ballina to Bega where residents can now use their $100 worth of Dine and Discover vouchers, following trials of the scheme.
Some 67 areas are now in play for businesses to register for Dine and Discover, which allows residents to download two lots of $25 dining vouchers and two lots of $25 experience vouchers.
Following trials in The Rocks, Sydney’s CBD and even Broken Hill, the scheme has extended to large parts of NSW in a bid to kickstart the economy as it recovers from COVID-19.
“Some 67 council areas have come on board and I encourage you to look at the website because that will show you (if your LGA is part of Friday’s rollout),” Mr Dominello told reporters in Darling Harbour on Friday.
“We should have the whole state coming in the next few weeks; some areas will come on board in about three or four different batches.
“I encourage you if you haven't already downloaded the (Service NSW) app, please download it. If you’re a business that hasn’t come on board (registered), please come on board. These will be very popular and so far the stats appear (to be successful for businesses).”
The scheme allows NSW residents aged 18 and older to apply for four $25 vouchers for a total of $100.
There are $25 vouchers to be used at restaurants, cafes, bars, wineries, pubs or clubs and they can be redeemed from Monday to Thursday.
There are also two $25 experience vouchers to be used for entertainment and recreation, including cultural institutions, live music, and arts venues and they can be used on any day of the week.
“It takes the cost of living off us but it’s a boost for businesses,” NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian said. “The number of businesses registered has been overwhelmingly satisfying.”
To redeem the vouchers, prospective customers must have a MyServiceNSW account. That can be done by downloading the Service NSW app and then registering for a MyServiceNSW account.
It is then a matter of simply applying for the vouchers. The vouchers can be used like any other form of payment but need to be done in person with the Service NSW app.
However, the vouchers cannot be spent on retail, alcohol, gambling, tobacco or accommodation. The vouchers also cannot be combined to pay for a $50 meal or a $50 experience.
That is because the state government wants residents to go out multiple times with the vouchers. Mr Dominello said the average spend was about $40 during the trials.
“It literally takes a matter of minutes to download the QR codes (for each voucher) on your phone,” he said.
“Once you've got that on your phone, you literally go up to a participating business, you show them the QR code, they scan it and that’s it.”
Ms Berejiklian urged people to use their vouchers in Sydney’s CBD, where businesses have been flattened due to the pandemic forcing large numbers of people to work from home.
“I really hope people will come to the Sydney CBD to use the vouchers; please come back, it’s safe and businesses have been doing it tough,” she said.
