Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews will remain in intensive care for the coming days after he slipped and fell on wet stairs while getting ready for work on Tuesday morning.
He was admitted to hospital where CT scans have revealed the premier has several broken ribs.
"Early this morning I was admitted to hospital after slipping and falling on wet and slippery stairs. A CT scan has revealed several broken ribs and vertebrae damage, and subsequent medical advice has recommended I remain in intensive care for the next few days," the premier said in a statement on Tuesday.
Mr Andrews said his family were extremely grateful for the care they had received.
"Cath, the kids and I are extremely grateful to the Ambulance Victoria paramedics who showed such care and kindness to our family this morning, as we are to the clinicians who have taken care of me today."
The premier also sent "warm and sincere thanks" to family, friends, colleagues and Victorians who had sent "messages of love and support throughout the day" and asked that his family's privacy be respected as he recovers.
Deputy Premier James Merlino will serve as Acting Premier over coming days.
Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien posted earlier on Twitter: "Hope it's not serious. Wishing Daniel a speedy recovery."

On Tuesday evening, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt released a brief statement noting he will spend the night in hospital after being admitted with a suspected infection.
The minister's office said the 55-year-old would be kept overnight for observation and take antibiotics and fluid during his stay.
The Victorian Liberal MP is expected to make a full recovery, and his condition is not considered to be linked to him receiving the COVID-19 vaccine last month.
