A decade-old road-rage homicide investigation on the Gold Coast has led police hundreds of kilometres south in search of a major clue in Western Sydney.
Queensland detectives, with assistance from NSW Police, have started exploring the Parramatta River, some 830km from where Omega Rushton was killed alongside the Gold Coast Highway on Australia Day, 2009.
The 32-year-old father-of-two was shot twice after he pulled over near the intersection of 5th Avenue following a traffic incident with a second vehicle.
Ballistic, DNA and fingerprint analysis have given police reason to believe his death is linked to the Gold Coast and Sydney bikies, said Detective Inspector Chris Ahearn.
“Police believe the persons directly involved in the shooting death of Omega were linked to the Gold Coast and Sydney chapters of organised crime syndicates and outlaw motorcycle gangs,” Detective Ahearn said.
“These persons are being investigated as accessories after the fact to murder, which is also a life imprisonment offence in Queensland.
“We are aware relationships and loyalties in these gangs change, so we are encouraging those people with information to come forward now as this may be your last chance at redemption.”
The construction worker was travelling south with two companions in his white 2001 Holden Rodeo ute on that fateful night.
Omega and one of his passengers exited the Holden Rodeo when a small maroon four-door sedan was seen stopping behind the ute before driving forward.
Two shots were allegedly fired from the rear passenger side window of the maroon sedan, with one shot fatally striking Omega in the abdomen, police said.
Witnesses reported seeing three men of Middle Eastern appearance in the maroon vehicle, with the rear passenger seen holding a black semi-automatic style pistol, police said.
The maroon vehicle then sped off, travelling south along the highway following the shooting.
Police will provide an update of their investigation on Thursday morning.
