Two dead, one fights for life after horror day in Vic waters - Herald Sun

Two people have drowned while another fights for life after a spate of tragic incidents in Victorian waters on Wednesday afternoon.

Two people are believed to have drowned in separate incidents on the Mornington Peninsula, while a third is in a critical condition after a near-drowning in Narre Warren.

A woman died and five others pulled from the water after a group of people were swept off rocks at Bushrangers Bay, in Flinders, on Wednesday afternoon.

Four people were swept off the rocks about 3.30pm, with two members of the public jumping into the water to come to their aid.

Four people were taken to Frankston Hospital and one to Rosebud Hospital from Flinders after a rescue mission to pull them from the water.

A 47-year-old woman is in a serious but stable, condition at Frankston hospital.

A 19-year-old girl and a 13-year-old girl are also being treated at Frankston Hospital and are both in a stable condition.

Life Saving Victoria general manager Liam Krige said both Westpac rescue helicopters were deployed in the rescue effort to save the washed away swimmers earlier on Wednesday afternoon.

Rescue crews paddled to two of the swimmers and kept them afloat as the helicopters each rescued two distressed swimmers each at about 4pm.

Air Ambulance arrived at the scene at about 4.30pm to rescue another swimmer from the water before the police Air Wing and Water Police collected the last two swimmers by boat.

Mr Krige said Bushrangers Bay is a remote stretch of coastline that is not patrolled by lifesavers.

“Many people who are rescued never planned on entering the water,” Mr Kringe said.

“This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of always exercising caution around water and never taking your eyes off the surf.”

“Even when you don’t intend on swimming, you should never underestimate the power of the ocean.”

“Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic incident.”

Musician JJay de Melo drowned at Bushrangers Bay in January 2019.

Meanwhile an 80-year-old man is believed to have drowned at Rye front beach on Wednesday afternoon.

The man was pulled from the water about 4pm but could not be revived.

Coroner’s reports are being prepared for both the Tootgarook and Flinders deaths.

The Tootgarook beach on Pt Nepean Rd is about 25 minutes from Bushrangers Bay.

Another person will be airlifted to hospital in critical condition after paramedics were called to a near-drowning in Melbourne’s south east.

An air ambulance helicopter has been dispatched after paramedics were called to Lysterfield Lake at about 5.45pm.
