Coronavirus Australia live news: Wednesday, August 5 - ABC News

Here's some more of what Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said today

ABC News

From 1am Saturday, Queensland will close its border to NSW and ACT.

There will be "limited" exceptions to this rule and unless people have an exemption or a pass for freight or is a border town resident with a pass the Premier said they will be "100 per cent stopped".

Ms Palaszczuk said the Government was acting on the advice of the Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young.

"Look at what is happening in Victoria: People can't even see their loved ones who are dying in aged care homes," she said.

There will be no change to travellers from NT, SA, Tasmania and WA.

Part of the reasoning for border closures is those people lying on their declaration forms and/or using alternate ports to get to Queensland.

Two people in their 60s have a notice to appear in court for lying on their border declaration about where they had been. They are in Nanango.

One man drove from Sydney to the ACT, flew to Brisbane then onto Cairns.

He expressed frustration with the restrictions, said he didn't like them and wanted to go to work.

Deputy Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said only a small number of people were lying but "whilst numbers are small the risk is too high".

And, the consular security guard who was granted an exemption and tested positive to COVID-19 when he arrived in Toowoomba will not be charged or fined because he followed the rules.
