South Australian businesses adjust as state begins eased coronavirus restrictions - ABC News

Businesses across South Australia are reopening their doors today to increased numbers of clients and customers, as the state ushers in the most significant easing of coronavirus restrictions to have occurred so far.

Restaurant and Catering Association of Australia CEO Wes Lambert said hospitality businesses in South Australia are "absolutely" pleased with the 80-person limit, up from 10 people indoors and 10 outdoors last week.

Venues will have to keep patrons in groups of 20 or less, in separate rooms.

"Hospitality is definitely going to begin a true recovery from today in South Australia," Mr Lambert said.

"It will be very important that both staff and consumers are COVID-safe, and understand that there are lots of COVID-safe guidelines and plans and best practices that exist … to ensure that touchpoints are removed, things are cleaned much more thoroughly than pre-COVID and that social distancing remains.

Businesses will be required to ensure social distancing is maintained, alongside increased hygiene protocols.

Mr Lambert said it would be up to traders to make sure their patrons followed the rules, and understand that SA Police may become involved if restrictions are breached.

He said about 10 per cent of Australian hospitality businesses have permanently closed because of coronavirus, but many in SA were able to continue trading through the crisis at reduced capacity.

Australian Hotels Association SA chief executive Ian Horne said it had been exactly 10 weeks since pubs shut.

"People will find it a little bit different — there'll be social distancing, there'll be markers on the floor … there'll be no smorgasbords or buffets or salad bars," he said.

"There'll be hand sanitising dispensers everywhere.

"We're a long way back from any sort of long-term viability but it's a start."

Salons, gyms modified to meet guidelines

Royal Park nail salon owner and operator Danielle also opened her doors early this morning, following ten weeks of no trade.

"I started at 7:00am and … I will probably see about 10 clients today," she said.

Having owned her salon for 29 years, she said the months of closed doors and no cashflow were hard, and that she and her husband relied on his business to keep them going.

She said she was happy to be back at work, and that she had made several changes to adhere to the state's guidelines for businesses.

Fitness Australia regional manager Steve Grace said gym owners and staff were looking forward to welcoming clients back in from today.

Gyms and other fitness facilities will have to limit the number of clients allowed on the premises to 80 people, also split into groups of 20 in separate rooms.

"With that 20-person limit per area, there's a number of social distancing protocols — as is the same for most other businesses — but also some extra hygiene protocols," Mr Grace said.

"The only other significant issue is that gym classes have been limited to 10 people, which has caused some issues in the sector."

He said that he expected the vast majority of gyms to reopen in some shape or form, and that clients had been indicating they were "very, very keen" to get back to exercising indoors as winter began.

Last Tuesday, Premier Steven Marshall said the state's "great results" in slowing the spread of coronavirus allowed for the easing of restrictions.

He said the Government had "confidence to carefully and slowly lift restrictions" and allow for a "massive increase" in the number of patrons allowed in hotels.

Under the eased restrictions, non-contact outdoor sport will be able to resume today and competition for outdoor contact sports can resume from June 25.

The relaxed restrictions also allow for up to 50 mourners at funerals.
