Coronavirus Australia latest: at a glance - My Scoop 24

Good evening and here is our daily summary of the latest developments in the field of the coronavirus pandemic in Australia. This is Calla Wahlquist who brings you the most important stories on Sunday May 10.

Ten were arrested in protest of the Covid-19 lock laws

Ten people were arrested on Sunday at a protest outside Parliament House in Melbourne. About 200 people gathered to protest Victoria’s continued lockdown laws and the concept of vaccination, blackmailed Bill Gates’ arrest, and pushed the conspiracy theory that the coronavirus was linked to the rollout of 5G.

Two out of ten arrested were the organizers of the protest, police said. The charges for the 10 include violating Victoria’s state of emergency, which ends on Monday and carries a $ 1,600 fine on the scene or a possible prison sentence. Three people were also charged with attacking a police officer, and one police officer was taken to hospital for a rib injury.

NSW to reduce restrictions from Friday

As of Friday, people in New South Wales are allowed to have five visitors at home and gather in groups of up to ten outside. Places of worship will also be open to a maximum of 10 people. Restaurants and cafes are open to up to 10 regulars, although Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian admitted that this may not be a viable business decision.

Weddings are allowed to have 10 guests, funerals 20 participants if kept indoors and 30 if they are kept outdoors. However, Berejiklian said she was not yet ready to lift restrictions on regional travel within NSW and warned that complacency is “the greatest threat to the community in New South Wales.” She said if the infection rates increased significantly, the condition would shut down again.

WA announces a four-step plan to reduce restrictions

Western Australia has announced a four-stage plan to reduce locking restrictions. The state is currently in phase one and moving to phase two, where indoor meetings of up to 20 people will be possible, and restaurants, cafes and pubs can be reopened from Monday, May 18 for up to 20 guests. Phase three will take place about four weeks later, details are yet to be confirmed, and then phase four will take place on a date to be determined.

In phase two, groups of up to 20 people can also participate in non-contact sports, swimming in outdoor pools and indoor and outdoor fitness classes. Weddings and funerals can have up to 20 participants when they are indoors and 30 when they are outdoors.

WA’s 13 regional boundaries are replaced by four, allowing travel between adjacent regions. The hard border with the eastern states remains. Prime Minister Mark McGowan said it has been “our strongest weapon in the fight against this virus” and “is probably the last limitation we are removing”.

Australia is registering 14 new cases

Australia registered only 14 new cases of coronavirus overnight. Ten of those cases were in Victoria, including one related to the Cedar Meats cluster, bringing the total number of cases in that cluster to 79. Queensland and NSW each registered two new cases.

China threatens barley tariffs

The Australian government is trying to convince China not to continue with the proposed tariffs against barley from Australia, which could destroy the $ 1.5 billion trade. Beijing has indicated that it can impose tariffs because it claims that an 18-month anti-dumping investigation in which Australia participated has found evidence of dumping and anti-competitive behavior. Australian Trade Minister Simon Birmingham says there is no evidence that Australia is involved in landfill and that Australian barley growers “operate on a fully commercial basis”. It follows weeks of escalating tension between Canberra and Beijing over Australia’s support for an independent investigation into the origins of Covid-19.
