The teenager who fell to his death from the balcony of a Gold Coast high-rise has been identified.
Cian English from Hawthorne in Brisbane’s eastern suburbs died after falling from the fourth floor of the View Pacific resort in Surfers Paradise just after 3am on Saturday, the Courier Mail reports.
A member of the public spotted his body on the footpath outside the tower building and alerted authorities.
A group of teenagers aged between 16-19 were then found slumped in varying stages of consciousness in a rented apartment, along with a large quantity of prescription and other drugs.
Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) Senior Operations Supervisor Neil Stead said that when paramedics got there, they were faced with an “extremely difficult job”.
The scenes they witnessed were so traumatic that those tasked with looking after Mr English have undergone welfare checks.
They tried in vain, using CPR, to save him, but it was too late.
“He had quite traumatic injuries, assumed to have fallen from about the fourth floor,” Mr Stead said.
“CPR was commenced on the individual and it was later called off. He could not be resuscitated and was deceased on scene.”
Upstairs in the apartment the teenager had fallen from, they found seven teenagers in a “semiconscious state”, affected by prescription drugs, reportedly diazepam, or Valium.
Four of them were taken to Robina Hospital in stable conditions.
POLICE SPEAKING TO WITNESSES
Police are now trying to piece together what happened in the lead-up to the fall.
“Investigations are underway to determine the cause and what may have taken place in the lead-up,” they said in a statement.
Nine said it spoke to one partygoer who attended the gathering briefly, but left when someone started waving around a knife.
Another witnesses told police they heard a loud noise towards the side of the apartment block before discovering Mr English’s body, according to the Courier Mail.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday afternoon, Mr Stead said paramedics were often called out to deal with drug overdoses in young people on the Gold Coast.
He expressed his concern for the family of the teenager who died and offered a warning about the use of drugs.
“There was some kind of drugs involved in this situation which caused the incident to occur. Drugs are simply not safe. Even prescribed drugs taken the wrong way are not safe,” he said.
“Just don’t do drugs, it’s as simple as that.
“Drug overdoses are quite common, regretfully, particularly among young people.”
Queensland Police said earlier that morning around 2:20am two 16-year-old boys believed to be from the same group as the partygoers were arrested between View Avenue and the Esplanade for possession of prescription drugs.
A RECURRING PROBLEM ON THE GOLD COAST
Several young people have fallen to their deaths from high-rise balconies in Surfers Paradise in recent years.
In November Liam Kearns, 22, from Christchurch in New Zealand, fell to his death from the 15th floor of the Breakers North building.
In 2018, Sydney-born Hamish Bidgood, 18, fell from a balcony at the Surfers Regent Apartments in Surfers Paradise 5am on November 29.
In 2016, another 17-year-old was injured falling from a balcony as he leaned over to reach for something he dropped.
Another four Schoolies in the same year were fined for balcony hopping.
Isabelle Colman, 17, died after falling from a 26th floor balcony at the Chevron Renaissance towers in 2012 while celebrating Schoolies.
In the month before, three others fell to their deaths from Gold Coast skyscrapers.
MYSTERY OVER FATAL FALL AT SYDNEY HOTEL
Also overnight, a 45-year-old woman was found dead in Sydney’s Darling Harbour after mysteriously falling from the balcony of a luxury hotel.
The woman’s body was discovered on a level one rooftop about 8pm last night after emergency services were called to Sussex Street to reports a woman falling from a tenth floor balcony from the Hyatt Regency hotel.
A 48-year-old man – known to the woman – was arrested at the scene and taken to Day Street Police Station. However, he has since been released pending further investigation.
Police have not yet formally identified the woman.
A crime scene has been set up and a police investigation has been launched into her death.
Officers are appealing for anyone with information or who was in the area at the time to come forward.
