A severe thunderstorm has hit parts of New South Wales as Sydney braces for wet weather.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is warning heavy rainfall, damaging winds and large hailstones will hit the Central West region and the Australian Capital Territory.
Flash flooding inundated the NSW town of Orange this afternoon.
"A southerly change is moving through a high-moisture environment in eastern NSW today," the BoM said.
"Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding, damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours."
Canberra's strongest wind gust of 87km/h was recorded at 3.06pm.
A possibly severe thunderstorm was heading for Sydney, the BoM said, with strong wind warnings issued for coastal areas from Sydney to Eden.
The BoM said winds would be about 20 to 30km/h in the early afternoon but could reach up to 40km/h late in the afternoon along the coast.
Eight to 25 millimetres of rain is predicted to fall in Sydney.
"There is a risk of localised heavy falls with thunderstorms in Sydney and Central Coast late Tuesday, extending to areas about the Hunter and Mid-North Coast into Wednesday as the trough reaches the area," the BoM said.
"This may result in flash flooding, potential impacts on road conditions and transportation, and water accumulation in low-lying areas."
It comes as yet another fresh batch of heatwave warnings were issued while much of the country is also set for a lashing by intense winds.
