A returned traveller at the Pan Pacific in Perth has caught COVID-19 from an infected guest staying in the room next door.

The WA Health Department on Tuesday said genomic sequencing had linked the infections. The cause of the transmission is under investigation.

Guests and security guards who stayed and worked on the same floor since the date of infection are undergoing testing and monitoring.

All guards who worked on the floor since the date of infection had so far tested negative in the past four days. They had also all been vaccinated.

The 12 people in the rooms on the same floor but not near the person who transmitted the virus were all asymptomatic and tested negative on day 13.

They have now been released from the Pan Pacific and will be tested on days three and seven after leaving. Health authorities are in daily contact with them.

It’s the second case of transmission at the Pan Pacific in the past month after a security guard caught the virus at work and passed it on to two of his Nollamara housemates.

An audit of rooms on level 18 of the Pan Pacific earlier this year by occupational hygienist Laurie Glossop had rated the hotel at “moderate risk” of transmission due to its positive pressure rooms.

In the wake of last month’s cluster, Health Minister Roger Cook said the findings of Dr Glossop’s ventilation audit had been “disputed” by the Pan Pacific, who commissioned their own review.

“The Glossop report made a range of observations about ventilation at the Pan Pac, based upon an audit of rooms on level 18. I know that the Pan Pac management have undertaken their own engineering report specifically on that floor and they say every room is either negative or neutral pressure,” Mr Cook said on May 3.

The Health Department today said the person to whom the virus was transmitted was previously reported as case 1018.

WA Chief Health Officer Andy Robertson said: “A further three people (all family) who were in a room opposite case 1018 are asymptomatic and have tested negative. They remain in quarantine and have been moved to an alternate room. They will be retested on day 17 and day 21.

“We are still exploring the best options for their management.”
