Liberal senator Jim Molan has announced he has an aggressive form of cancer and is stepping away from parliamentary duties while he undergoes further medical tests and treatment.
The retired army major-general made the announcement on Monday afternoon, saying he has “never been afraid to fight the battles that need fighting”.
In a message to colleagues, Senator Molan said he was last week diagnosed with an “aggressive form of cancer”.
He said he would be taking leave from the Senate for further testing to confirm the prognosis and to commence treatment.
“Although I am personally stepping back for a while, my office will remain open and fully operational,” he said in a statement posted to social media.
“My team will continue to work hard alongside my colleagues in the Morrison government on the issues that matter.
“My commitment to serving you, the people of NSW and Australia, has not wavered.
“Whilst this news has come as a shock, I have many reasons to be positive. I am receiving the best possible care from my clinicians, and have the love, support and prayers of my family. I have never been afraid to fight the battles that need fighting, and this is no exception. I thank you for your support, and we ask for privacy at this time.”
The former soldier was sworn into the Senate in February 2018, replacing Nationals senator Fiona Nash who was ruled ineligible to be elected to the Senate due to her dual British citizenship.
He then failed to be elected for another term at the last election after being placed in the virtually unwinnable fourth position on the Coalition’s Senate ticket. But he rejoined the Senate in November 2019 to fill the spot vacated by former Liberal senator Arthur Sinodinos on the condition that he not recontest at the next election.
His term is set to expire on July 1 next year.
He previously served as Chief of Operations for the Coalition forces in Iraq and was former prime minister Tony Abbott’s special envoy for Operation Sovereign Borders.
Anthony is foreign affairs and national security correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
