PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team tied with two others with the best team score here Saturday, and in the process jumped from 14th into seventh place after two rounds in the annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
No. 39 Georgia Tech assumed the lead with a 571 team score, with the Ramblin' Wreck one of three schools under par at minus-5. Charlotte and Oregon are tied for second at 1-under 575, with No. 49 San Diego and Boise State tied for fourth with even-par 576 scores.
The Buffaloes, No. 72 by Golfweek, recorded a 1-under team score of 287 in the second round, matched only by Boise State and SDSU. Nine better than their first round effort, CU is in at 7-over 583 heading into the final round, still within shot of a top finish.
First round leader, No. 24 Kansas, had to withdraw from the event due to COVID issues in the Jayhawk program, forcing to pause all activities in the program. KU was 14-under par but had one player test positive.
"A really nice job by the team today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We did very well at managing our games and staying in the present. We got off to just a so-so start on some tough holes and then just stayed in it all day. The wind really picked up at the end of the round and we managed that well, too."
Between the tougher course set-up and the wind gusts picking up late in the day, the scores were much higher and birdies were tougher to come by. There were just 136 total on the par-3s and par-4s combined (out of 1,582 attempts); there were 147 on the par-5's (452 tries). And CU's five designated scorers, after recording six holes worse than bogey that accounted for 11 strokes Friday, had none on Saturday.
Sophomore Adam Matteson led the Buffs on Friday, as he recorded one of just four rounds in the 60's in the 113-man field with a 3-under 69 on the 7,322-yard, par-72 Classic Club course. That has him tied for sixth overall with a 3-under 141 total after he opened with an even-par round on Friday. He matched his career-best round Saturday with three birdies and 15 pars despite the conditions, opening with 10 straight pars before scoring all his birds on the next five holes. He's played the par-3s at 1-under and the par-4s even, tied for fifth and sixth, respectively, in the field.
"Adam played a spectacular round," Edwards noted. "There weren't many subpar rounds Saturday (14), and only one other player had a bogey-free round."
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin is tied for 20th after a 1-over 73 has him 1-over overall with a 145 score. He had one birdie and 15 pars against two bogeys. He parred his first six holes before bogeying No. 16, and then scored par on his next nine. He then bogeyed the 8th, but rallied with his lone bird on the 595-yard, par-5 9th. His 28 pars are second-most in the field entering the final round.
Redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski fashioned an even-par 72, and at 4-over 148 overall, he's tied for 47th. He had a team-high five birdies with eight pars and five bogeys. He opened with two bogeys, worked back to even five holes later, and then was either even, 1-over or 1-under the rest of the way. His nine birdies through two rounds are tied for fifth-most in the field.
Junior John Paterson is tied for 52nd after posting a 1-over 73, as he had three birdies and 11 pars against four bogeys. He was sailing along at 2-under through 15 holes, but bogeyed each of his last three holes (Nos. 7 through 9). He's in a 5-over 149 through 36 holes.
Senior Victor Bjorlow is tied for 88th after a 3-over 75 has him at 11-over 155 through 36 holes. He had three birdies and nine pars with six bogeys, two of which he opened his day with. He then bogeyed his next hole and was just 1-over the rest of the way.
Two Buffaloes are competing here individually. Senior Cole Krantz shot a 4-over 76 that has him in at 7-over 151, tying him for 67th overall. He actually was cruising along; after a double bogey on No. 11, his second hole of the day, he worked back to even with five holes left on his scorecard. But that's when disaster struck, suffering a quintuple bogey nine on the par-4 8th hole. To his credit, he came back and finished his day with a birdie on No. 9. He has a tournament-best 29 pars through two rounds.
The Buffaloes have done a masterful job on the par-3s, all seven playing them at even-par or better; the end result has CU 2-under on the shorter holes with a 2.95 average, best in the field. In addition to Matteson and Paterson tied for fifth in the field, the other five Buffaloes are all even and tied for 13th.
Colorado State's A.J. is the leader in the clubhouse through two rounds, in at 7-under par 137, the other player in the field without a bogey or worse Saturday. That's two better than runner-up Charlie Reiter of San Diego. Kansas' Luke Kluver had an opening round 65 but dropped out due to KU's COVID issues.
The third and final round is set for Sunday but with a shotgun format; Colorado will be paired with Boise State, Colorado State and UCLA and will begin to tee off on the 4th hole at 9 a.m. MDT.
NOTES: The two holes in that soured CU's round on Friday, the 459-yard 11th and 349-yard 15th (both par-4s) that saw Colorado's four scorers play at 12-over par were much friendlier Saturday, as the scorers played them at 2-over. They are also playing at the toughest two holes in the meet through two rounds (+0.54 and +0.41, respectively) … Through two rounds, Colorado is tied for eighth in birdies (29) and is sixth in pars (113) … In addition to the mastery of the par-3 holes, the Buffs have played the par-4 holes at 28-over (tied for 12th) and the par-5's at 8-under (tied for seventh) … The average score for 1113 rounds on Saturday was 75.79, nearly a stroke-a-and-half higher than Friday's figure 74.42 (the two round average is 75.08) … Joe Neuheisel, the son of former CU football coach Rick Neuheisel, is a senior at Boise State and had one of the other rounds in the 60s Saturday (tied for the low with a 68).
