Victoria records 14 new coronavirus cases, eight more COVID-19 deaths as 14-day rolling average continues to drop - ABC News

Victoria has recorded 14 new coronavirus cases and eight further COVID-19 deaths, the state's Health Department has announced.

It brings Melbourne's 14-day rolling case average to 25.1, the third consecutive day it has been below 30.

Regional Victoria's 14-day new case average has dropped to 0.8.

Mystery cases are also declining. There were 34 cases with an unknown source in the two weeks to September 22 — down three on yesterday's figure.

Deakin University epidemiologist Catherine Bennett said that was "a good sign".

"In Melbourne now … our test positive rate is .03 per cent," she told RN Breakfast.

"So that's a good sign that we're not seeing these mystery cases appear."

For Melbourne to enter its second step of eased restrictions, its 14-day rolling average needed to be between 30 and 50 cases.

Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed he would announce further easing of restrictions on Sunday, but warned they would not be drastic changes.

More details on today's case numbers are expected to be provided at a press conference later today.

Victoria recorded 12 new coronavirus cases yesterday, which Mr Andrews described as "another strong number" that showed the "strategy is working".

More to come.
