Now that protective face coverings are the new norm, beauty routines require some adjusting. Regardless of skin type, wearing a face mask for short stretches of time—let alone throughout the duration of a flight, as mandated by most airlines—often results in redness, sensitivity, and the dreaded “maskne.” “Your breath, perspiration, and heat under the mask can create an ideal environment for irritation and imbalance,” says Venice-based aesthetician Alexandra Wagner, who recommends, before donning a mask, applying a water-based serum or light moisturizer that penetrates immediately in lieu of heavy creams and oils.
Starting off with a clean complexion is also key. “My number one piece of advice when it comes to preventing breakouts and irritations is making sure your skin underneath the mask is kept clean,” says aesthetician Shani Darden, who, pre-pandemic, treated Hollywood clients from her Beverly Hills flagship. Unsurprisingly, both skin experts advise steering clear of makeup when possible to avoid buildup along with any trapped sweat and oil.
What about soothing and healing irritated skin once the mask comes off? Read on for the best products, treatments, and tips for pampering stressed skin, reviving dull complexions, treating maskne, and everything in between—much of which will also apply to travel-weary and jet-lagged skin once we’re racking up the frequent flier miles again.

Toner
Calming and restorative, toner might just be the most underrated beauty essential during this time. “Toner is important for helping to rid the skin of bacteria and also balancing its pH,” says Wagner. “Even after cleanser, it removes any leftover makeup, dirt, and irritants that accumulate while wearing a mask for long periods of time, and that can disrupt your skin’s microbiome.” She recommends applying toner with a cotton round in an upward motion, and notes oft-forgotten areas like the hairline on the neck and around the ears, where oils and grime can build up. “Then, let your skin breathe without any product for a few minutes to help it rebalance and oxygenate,” she says.
For an exfoliating toner that is gentle enough for even the most sensitive types, January Labs’ version brightens and hydrates in addition to restoring the skin’s pH; Epicuren’s rejuvenating aloe vera- and amino acid-infused mist enables healing and allows for hands-off, on-the-go convenience that’s especially refreshing on mask breaks in the car or outdoors.
