The men involved in a deadly “targeted” shooting in Sydney’s inner west are believed to have links to notorious motorcycle gangs.
7 News reports that the fatal incident, which unfolded in Lewisham in Sydney’s inner west on Friday, will be treated as a bikie shootout with specialist police called in to investigate.
One man was shot dead and another rushed to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown where he remains in a serious condition.
Shocked neighbours found a bloodied man, in his 30s, on Henry St just after 1pm Friday. He died on the way to hospital.
Although initial reports indicated the man had been stabbed, police later confirmed he had been shot in the chest.
A report in The Daily Telegraph said a second man, 55, was located inside a home on Victoria St and was treated at the scene by paramedics for a gunshot wound to the head.
Police allege the injury was self-inflicted.
Several police vehicles, the dog squad, and emergency services were called to the scene, blocking off several surrounding streets as officers raided properties.
Police also stormed a nearby laneway, with weapons drawn.
NSW released a statement which said: “Officers from Inner West Police Area Command have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
“Initial inquiries suggest the shootings were targeted and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” police said.
The two men are believed to be known to each other but it is unclear what sparked the shooting.
Police were still trying to identify the dead man.
On average there has been a shooting every day for the last month, with 35 shootings in 30 days across NSW.
