Lewisham shooting: One dead, another injured in Sydney’s inner west - NEWS.com.au

One man has been shot dead in Sydney’s inner west and another man has been taken to hospital in a critical condition with gunshot wounds.

NSW Police said one man, believed to be aged in his 30s, was found on Henry St in Lewisham just after 1pm on Friday and died on the way to hospital.

Despite initial reports from police he “was found with a stab wound to his chest”, a police spokeswoman later told news.com.au the deceased man’s wounds had been assessed and it appears as though he was also shot.

Neighbours reportedly found him on the street.

The second man was located inside a home on adjoining Victoria St and treated at the scene by paramedics for gunshot wounds.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman told news.com.au the man, believed to be aged in his 50s, is in a “critical condition with a serious head injury”.

The patient was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown under police escort just before 6pm.

Speaking to reporters about the first man found injured, NSW Police Chief Inspector Despa Fitzgerald said it was being treated as “suspicious”.

“Obviously we can’t rule out any self-harm injuries but we are leaning towards more of a suspicious attack,” she said.

Heavily-armed riot squad officers surrounded a property. Nine News reported tactical police locked down the area, however a police spokeswoman said officers had “established crime scenes on the relevant streets” - Henry and Victoria streets.

Local residents were told it could be hours before they could return to their homes, The Daily Telegraph reported.

A woman in black was seen gesturing to police and searched by officers before evidence bags were placed over her hands and she was taken to an unmarked car.

“In respect to the Inner West Police Area Command doing canvassing she has presented herself as a witness to what she may have seen,” Chief Inspector Fitzgerald said.

She said the woman was not a person of interest in their investigations.

Nine News on Friday night reported the woman was being questioned at Newtown Police Station and was cooperating with detectives.

Sirens rang out throughout the rainy and grey afternoon and a helicopter was earlier seen landing at Petersham Oval.
