Don’t expect border consensus at National Cabinet today
National Cabinet is not expected to agree on the management of borders or how to define and treat COVID-19 hotspots when it meets today, despite growing presure to find workable solutions to the issue.
This week's confirmation of the steepest contraction in GDP has seen some in the Federal Government ramp up calls for borders to be reopened.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison will today take a proposal for a "national standard" for how COVID-19 hotspots should be defined, based on medical advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee.
Such a standard would see consistency applied at state borders when determining the medical risk a person from a given area poses.
The proposal has already been circulated among some states and territories, but full agreement on the plan is not expected to be adopted when leaders meet today.
It is understood Mr Morrison wants states who do not agree to begin outlining their plans to reduce COVID-19 restrictions, even if they do not sign up to the national standard on hotspots.
"Australia was not meant to be closed, Australia was meant to be open," he told Parliament yesterday.
"Australia must become whole again."
