As San Bernardino County schools begin the year with distance learning, the YMCA of the East Valley will offer in-person care, distance-learning support and physical activity for children in kindergarten through sixth grade at its facilities Highland, Redlands and San Bernardino.
The Y’s KEY (Knowledge, Enrichment and Youth Development) day-camp program is offered in four week-increments, with a choice of morning, all-day or extended-day sessions.

During the school year, the YMCA of the East Valley normally provides care to more than 6,000 students. When school campuses closed in the spring because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Y pivoted, offering child-care programs for children of for essential workers.
Through the spring school closures, YMCA of the East Valley provided child-care for more than 70 families of essential workers and during that time had no cases or suspected cases of COVID-19, according to a news release.
The YMCA will continue safety practices during the KEY program. Children and staff are required to wear face coverings and have temperature checks. Rooms are cleaned after each use, along with all equipment, games and toys, and the staff disinfects all surfaces and spaces daily with electrostatic sprayers, according to the news release. The Y is also trying to keep children in small learning pods.
“We’re glad to be able to support families across our community as we work to keep everyone safe,” Breann Lindsey, camp director at the Redlands Family YMCA, said in the news release. “Bridging the gaps in our community means no one should have to choose between their child’s education and development and providing for their family.”
The Redlands Family YMCA is at 500 E. Citrus Ave., the San Bernardino Family YMCA is at 808 E. 21st St., and the Highland Family YMCA is at 7793 Central Ave.
