Baby boy among two new COVID-19 cases in Queensland

By Toby Crockford

The child, who is one of two new COVID-19 cases in Queensland overnight, is a baby boy.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk would not go into specifics regarding the child during the state government media conference on Sunday, but she did say the boy is "doing very well".

He is a family member of one of the existing positive cases linked to the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre outbreak.

A BYDC supervisor tested positive on Wednesday and four more centre employees were also confirmed to be carrying the virus on Saturday.

Ms Palaszczuk also gave an update on BYDC test results on Sunday.

Out of the 500-strong workforce being tested, 202 staff results have come back negative.

Meanwhile, 111 out of 131 tests done for the detainees have returned as negative.

The remaining test results are yet to be returned, but the Queensland Premier says she has asked that they be prioritised.

Palaszczuk stays silent on AFL Grand Final chances

By Lydia Lynch

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk would not comment on whether her state was still a front-runner in the fight to host the AFL grand final as a new COVID-19 cluster continues to grow.

The AFL will hear the Queensland government's pitch on Tuesday with NSW, Western Australia and South Australia are also vying to secure the grand final.

“I think what everybody knows is that we have word class management systems and we also have dedicated contact tracers,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“As you can see we are throwing everything we can at this, as we do every time we have a cluster.

“The AFL has not made any decisions to date and we will await decisions from the AFL.”

Farmers still on tenterhooks despite government backflip

By Roy Ward

Koo Wee Rup farmer Paul Watzlaff was staring down a dark path on Friday after a shock decision from the State Government to close Farmers Markets due to social distancing concerns.

Mr Watzlaff, partner Clare McCulloch and their casual farm hands and market staff were all on tenterhooks as farming and market groups spent Friday in talks with the government who relented on Friday night, allowing the majority of Victoria’s markets to go ahead.

Mr Watzlaff and Ms McCulloch run Thriving Foods Farm which grows organic, chemical-free vegetables and eggs to sell at farmers markets around Melbourne.

They were looking at losses worth tens of thousands of dollars if markets were closed. They contemplated not just having to give away or use their perishable vegetables as chicken feed but also faced the prospect of having to let go of the 30 people they employ in casual roles.

"I think most people can imagine what it would be like to have been harvesting for the better part of two days and then all of a sudden the carpet is pulled out from underneath you," Mr Watzlaff said.

Mr Watzlaff said the backflip was a welcome one and three of the four markets Thriving Foods appears at opened on Saturday.

Sydney businessman given travel permit to pick up a luxury yacht

By Caitlin Fitzsimmons

A Sydney businessman with connections to the Morrison government was granted an exemption from the travel ban to pick up a new luxury yacht in Europe.

Jost Stollmann, the founder of ASX-listed Tyro Payments, was given permission to leave Australia at the end of May and is now waiting out the pandemic on board his yacht in the Greek islands.

German-born Mr Stollmann has lived in Australia since 2004 and became a citizen in January 2011, making him subject to the ban on citizens and permanent residents leaving the country without permission from the government. The travel ban has been in place since March 25.

Mr Stollmann wrote to Double Bay Sailing Club 10 days ago to beg off canteen duty because he was abroad and would only return to Australia once the overseas travel ban was lifted.

In the email, obtained by this masthead, he said he had flown to Trieste, Italy, at the end of June to pick up his "awesome" new 24-metre yacht, SY ALITHIA, which he had then sailed to the "charming and spiritual island of Patmos in the Greek Dodekanese".

Miles says Queenslanders need to do even more tests

By Lydia Lynch

UPDATED: Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles said Queensland needs to do “a lot more tests” to clamp down on a cluster linked to the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre.

More than 6000 people were swabbed for the virus on Saturday, and two people returned a positive result.

Queensland police have spent the past few days tracking down young people who had recently been released from the detention centre to ask them to be tested.

An entire new workforce will be brought in to run the detention centre this week after 500 staff were tested for the virus.

Youth Justice director-general Bob Gee said no detainees had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and the strict lockdown at the centre had begun to ease.

“The young people are moving in and out of their cells in a very structured and targeted way,” he said.

Young people were put into solitary confinement earlier this week while a massive testing effort was undertaken.

Mr Gee said young people were now allowed out to play table tennis and other activities.

Two new cases for Queensland as locals flock to testing clinics

By Lydia Lynch

Another two people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Queensland overnight after 6875 people flocked to fever clinics to be swabbed for the virus on Saturday.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said despite only recording two new cases, the state was “not out of the woods” with more tests yet to be returned.

“We are taking it day by day,” she said.

Of the two new cases, one was a young boy and both were known to people who had already tested positive.

Health authorities were still scrambling to track down people who might have been exposed to the coronavirus after a supervisor at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre tested positive on Wednesday night.

Four other workers at the detention centre tested positive on Saturday and two of their family members have also been infected.

Two new cases for Queensland

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the state has recorded two new COVID-19 cases but they are not 'out of the woods yet' following an outbreak at a detention centre.

Queensland has 16 active cases but are pushing through new tests to make sure there isn't a new outbreak happening.

More to come.
