Spike in reckless 'selfie stunts' on Sydney trains during lockdown - Sydney Morning Herald

Thousands of reckless acts and injuries have been caught by CCTV on Sydney’s train network, with trespassing increasing by about 10 per cent during the coronavirus lockdown.

Sydney Trains has recorded more than 2600 incidents of trespassing in the past 12 months, prompting NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance to plead with the public to stop risking their lives to “chase social media likes”.

Some of the CCTV footage of the incidents reveals people jumping onto the back of trains and riding them through Sydney’s transport network.

“Many of them (are) reckless acts for selfie stunts,” Mr Constance said.

“These incidents also have an effect on the broader network and can cause delays to services.”

Another 1900 slips, trips and falls were recorded on the rail network, including people falling between the carriage and platform, across the tracks or sliding down stairs.

Sydney Trains acting chief executive Suzanne Holden said there had been a jump in trespassing during COVID-19 lockdown.

“We have seen more activity out on the rail corridor. I don’t know why that has happened, trespassing is up about 10 per cent,” Mr Holden said.

The NSW government released the footage as part of the 15th annual Rail Safety Week, set up to remind commuters to remain vigilant while travelling on the city’s network.

“It is easy to forget how dangerous trains and stations can be if you are distracted or in a hurry. Trains travel at speeds of more than 100km/h, they are surprisingly quiet and take a significant distance to stop,” Ms Holden said.

“Fortunately the majority of customers do the right thing and I’d like to thank them for showing respect for their fellow passengers and our hard working staff, particularly during this uncertain time.”
