Mick Hawi murder trial: Witness says she saw ‘skin and blood’ - NEWS.com.au

A tearful receptionist has told of the gruesome moment she witnessed Mahmoud ‘Mick’ Hawi’s execution from just metres away and saw his “skin and blood” inside his luxury SUV.

Eyewitness Stephanie Nicolaou wiped away tears on Friday as she re-lived the daylight execution of the former national president of the Comanchero outlaw motorcycle gang two years ago.

Her frantic triple-0 call was played to the court during the Supreme Court trial of alleged gunman Yusuf Nazlioglu, 38, and Jamal Eljaidi, 32, who is accused of being the getaway driver.

Both have pleaded not guilty to murder.

Ms Nicolaou, giving evidence via audiovisual link from interstate, at times struggled to maintain her emotions as she told of how she was working the front desk at Fitness First Rockdale on February 15, 2008

“The next few seconds I heard a banging noise,” Ms Nicolaou said.

“It was repeated. There was a bang, bang, bang. I don’t know how many, I feel about 12 shots.”

She told of the moment she felt fragments of glass fall on her neck as bullets peppered the glass windows of the business.

“I first registered there was a person inside the car when I saw skin and blood,” she said.

“My manager was shouting at me from the other end of the gym to call triple-0. I told her I didn’t want to go anywhere near the reception desk.”

She mustered the courage to crawl back to her desk to retrieve her phone despite her fear that the gunman would return.

Mr Nazlioglu is accused of carrying out the hit after falling out with Mr Hawi in late 2016 during a fishing trip to the Central Coast.

Mr Hawi’s widow Carolina Gonzales told the court that Mr Hawi was left embarrassed by Mr Nazlioglu’s actions and it ended his relationship with his once close friend.

An inner Sydney panel beater told the court how the alleged getaway car used in the execution was dropped outside his shop a month after the shooting.

On the closing day of the first week of the trial, Abraham Stambouli told the court that he noticed the silver Toyota Aurion parked in front of a nearby business in March 2018.

At the time he was the owner of East Coast Bodyworks and several days later he received a call from a client who told him he had dropped off the car.

Mr Stambouli said he noticed the car, which had no number plates attached, was unlocked and couldn’t find a key.

He said the client told him: “I’ve dropped off a car in front of the Telstra building and he wanted to see what was involved in getting it fixed up and re-registered.”

Several days after the Aurion first came to Mr Stambouli’s attention, police discovered the car.

He then rang his client, who he said was in disbelief that it was involved in a crime, and was told that he had sold it to ‘some guys’ but they then changed their mind.

CCTV footage played to the jury this week showed the masked gunman being whisked away in a silver grey Mercedes which was later found burned in a nearby Rockdale street.

His killers then allegedly used the silver Aurion as a second getaway vehicle.

When police discovered it, they found a black balaclava in the front passenger-side footwell.

The court heard this week that gunshot residue and Nazlioglu’s DNA were found on the balaclava.

The trial continues.
