A church in Sydney's inner west has been linked to two COVID-19 cases after a couple who attended mass last weekend tested positive for the virus.

St Brigid's Church in Marrickville notified attendees last night that a man and a woman who attended the Vigil Mass on July 25 were confirmed as having coronavirus.

"After further consultation, NSW Health has advised that the couple is considered LOW RISK since health authorities believe they were not infectious at the time they attended the church," the church said in a statement on Sunday.

"As a precautionary measure, our church was closed today until further notice and will undergo a deep clean tomorrow, in line with NSW Health guidelines."

Anyone who attended the vigil mass on July 25 doesn't need to self-isolate but should get tested if any symptoms arise.

"We have encouraged our parish staff and Passionist community to be tested and to isolate until their tests results are back," the church said.

"This is simply for the purpose of good practice, as it seems we have entered into the Covid19 second wave."

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has warned NSW's response to COVID-19 over the next few weeks will "make or break" the state.

Speaking on Sunday, Ms Berejiklian said the state was on "high-alert" and it was critical that everyone worked together to "hold the line".

“The next few weeks will make or break us … I can't stress enough that whilst we are holding the line, we are in a very critical phase of the pandemic," she said.

It comes after 12 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, with one having no known source of infection.

That case was a childcare worker at Advance Early Learning in Merrylands, with a second worker at the same centre tested positive on Sunday morning.

Chief health officer Dr Kerry Chant said authorities were working to establish how the staff member contracted the virus.

“The centre is currently closed for cleaning, close contact tracing is under way, and investigations as to the source of that infection in that person is under way,” she said yesterday.

Health authorities in New South Wales are urging people to start wearing face masks in a range of scenarios, as community transmission of COVID-19 grows.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the medical advice on the need for masks had changed and said people should don one in four key circumstances.

Those four areas are: 1) If you’re in an enclosed space like public transport or a supermarket; 2) If you’re in a customer service job; 3) If you attend a place of worship; and; 4) If you’re in a COVID-19 hotspot or an area of high community transmission.

Ms Berejiklian explained her reasoning behind the new advice.

“Firstly, if you are in an enclosed space and you cannot guarantee social distancing, such as public transport, such as when you are buying groceries, you should be wearing a mask.

“We would also like to see more staff to a customer facing wearing masks, whether they are in hospitality venues or whether they are in retail. Whenever they are facing customers, we strongly recommend that they wear masks.

“If you are attending a place of worship, we want you to wear a mask. If you are attending a church, synagogue or mosque, we would like you to wear a mask.

“And finally, if you are in an area where there is high community transmission or a number of cases, we want you to wear a mask.”
