EAST BRUNSWICK – Superintendent of Schools Victor Valeski says the district is ready for a new school year with a plan that is "built with passion, but implemented with compassion.”
"They (stakeholders) all share the same desire to make our plan the absolute best it could be under the conditions and constraints we know now," said Valeski, who appeared with Gov. Phil Murphy at a press conference last week.
The district's 101-page "Restart and Recovery Plan" utilized feedback from a survey sent to families in the district that has just under 8,100 students in 11 schools — eight elementary, one middle, one junior high and one high — and more than 1,700 staff members.
"Nearly 70% of respondents desired some form of hybrid instructional model for their children. About 30 %wanted a full virtual option," he said.
While a return to full-time in-school instruction is not possible this fall, Valeski said he is "confident that the hybrid plan will ensure that all students regardless of where they will be during the school day will be receiving high-quality education."
"Above all, safety must remain our dominant decision factor," he said. "In East Brunswick, we will be able to meet the health and safety standards outlined in The Road Back and return to our classrooms in the fall while keeping our students and staff safe."
Valeski added the plan needed to be "flexible and adaptable" as "we know those constraints could change between now and our anticipated start of school."
Cohorts
All students will participate in virtual learning to some extent, Valeski said. Some students will be in a 100% virtual learning cohort, as designated by their families.
The elementary school model has two cohorts, each designed for 50% of the enrollment. Special area teachers move to students' homeroom classrooms rather than students moving, to limit student interaction outside the classroom bubbles, Valeski said.
In the middle, junior high and high schools, there will be four cohorts each representing 25% of the school's enrollment.
Students will switch classes at the secondary schools. To minimize close contact with other students, the halls will have arrows to direct traffic.

Elementary students will alternate being in school on a two-consecutive-day schedule.
Secondary students will be in school with their cohorts two consecutive school days out of every eight and follow a 63-minute period schedule. That will allow students to attend four of eight classes on each day.
For all students, after mid-day dismissal, virtual instruction and support will continue until the end of each school's regularly scheduled day.
Lunch will not be served in school cafeterias, but "grab-and-go" meals will be provided.
Sibling alignment also will be incorporated in the plan "to the extent possible," Valeski said, ensuring that students in the same household attend school on the same day.
Live virtual lessons
According to the plan's details, students in the 100% virtual learning cohort will not be expected to be on the computer all day.
Students who are remote learning will log in for the teacher’s live lesson during a portion of the scheduled period. Teachers will meet virtually with small groups and individual students throughout the day to re-teach, check for understanding, and answer questions. While not logged in with their teacher live, students are expected to complete independent assignments.

All K-7 students will receive a Chromebook and use Google Classroom to access all announcements, assignments, videos, daily schedules, virtual meeting links and weekly planners. All students in grades 8 to 12 will receive a Lenovo laptop and utilize Canvas Learning Management System.
Staff will self-screen as they enter buildings and students will be screened and given temperature checks as they get off the bus before entering the building.
