Coronavirus Victoria: Man in 20s dies from COVID-19 - NEWS.com.au

Australia has recorded its youngest coronavirus death on Friday.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed the tragic news that a man in his 20s was among 14 deaths and 372 new infections announced on Friday.

A 30-year-old Queensland man was reported to be the previous youngest person in the country to die from the wildly infectious disease in June.

It takes Victoria’s death toll to 289.

Three more women and two men in their 80s and four men and four women in their 90s also sadly passed away.

Twelve of the 14 deaths were linked to aged-care.

Shocking news of the young man’s death in Victoria comes as the state’s chief health officer revealed people aged between 20 and 29 were the biggest driver of community transmission.

Professor Brett Sutton said the group made up 27 per cent of the mystery cases identified in Victoria so far, followed by those aged between 30 and 39.

He said these groups were the most mobile in the community and were most likely to leave the house for essential work and shopping.

Data also revealed contact tracers could not identify the primary source of infection in one in five Victorian cases.

“That could be for a variety of reasons, it could be that no one else in their household is unwell or in their registered workplace, the places they nominated they’ve been don’t have existing clusters or outbreaks,” Prof Sutton said.

“Sometimes people won’t recall a close contact, or they’ve had a more casual contact and can’t identify where they’ve been or who they‘ve been with.”

Twenty per cent of infections in metropolitan Melbourne were mystery cases, while 13 per cent of cases in regional Victoria were unknown.

“The strategy is stage 4 will work both for cases known and close contacts and its a really imp intervention for community transmission where unknown transmission occurs and we‘ll continue to see that new daily figure come down over time,” Prof Sutton said.
