Coronavirus Australia: NSW records nine new cases and Westfield shoppers warned - NEWS.com.au

Although NSW continued its 10-day ‘low streak’ of coronavirus numbers today, concerns are mounting over the rising number of cases in a Sydney quarantine hotel.

Two security guards at the Marriott Hotel in Sydney’s Circular Quay have tested positive for the virus. One tested positive in the last 24 hours.

NSW Chief Health Officer Dr Kerry Chant has given an urgent update into the source of the security guards’ virus infection.

“That case was confirmed after midnight and investigations are ongoing,” Dr Chant said of the second security guard‘s result, adding that close contacts had been identified since.

The security guard worked five shifts at the hotel, on August 3, 5, 9, 10 and 11, Dr Kerry Chant said.
He had worked a shift with the other positive guard on August 3, but there was currently not an “immediate connection” between them.

She revealed 700 tests had been conducted in relation to the guards testing positive.

“Approximately four close contacts have been identified, and are being managed in a hotel facility,” she said.

She added that health officials are “not sure as to his infectiousness” as he showed no symptoms of the virus.

The second guard also worked at the Sheraton Grand Hyde Park overnight on August 16, but it was not clear if he was infectious at that time.

Today NSW recorded just nine cases of the coronavirus.

The low count of cases means NSW is currently sitting at 3792 cases altogether.

NSW Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Jeremy McAnulty said four of the cases were close contacts of previously reported cases whose source was under investigation.

“One case is a household contact of a previously reported confirmed case linked to the Tengara School for Girls Cherrybrook cluster,” he said.

“Two cases are household contacts of previously reported cases linked to the Bankstown area funeral gathering cluster.”

In a statement, NSW Health added: “One of today’s cases attended Cabramatta Family Practice on John St Cabramatta on 20 August. The practice is closed and has been cleaned and everyone at the facility at the time is being contacted.”

Dr McAnulty also used the opportunity to remind NSW citizens to get tested if they attended the Westfield in Mt Druitt on Wednesday August 12, between 12pm and 12.30pm, or Friday August 14, between 11am and 12pm.

Yesterday, NSW recorded just one new case.

It comes as NSW’s neighbour Victoria recorded its second day in a row of under 200 coronavirus cases.
