Waverley College evacuates after student tests positive to COVID-19 - Sydney Morning Herald

Waverley College in Sydney's eastern suburbs is sending students home after a year 7 student tested positive for coronavirus.

A spokeswoman for the independent Catholic boys' school said the boy's parents notified the school of his positive diagnosis on Tuesday morning.

The school has since communicated with parents, starting with year 7 parents, and requested students be collected.

Those students who could not be picked up are being sent home on private buses by the college, the spokeswoman said.

"We wish to advise you that Waverley College has been informed by NSW Health that a student on the Senior Campus has tested positive for COVID-19," the school's message to parents said.

"We understand that the student has not been in contact with any boy from the Junior School.

"As a precaution we are sending all senior students home effective immediately. Junior students should remain on the Junior campus, unless they are a sibling of a senior student."

The Waverley College spokeswoman said the evacuation had been "very orderly" as the school had put together a plan and practised it last week.

"The school is very prepared for this, being [in] a coronavirus hotspot," she said.

It comes after a St Ignatius College, Riverview was evacuated last week when a student tested positive.

NSW Health is working with the school to identify and notify close contacts of the student, who was not on campus on Tuesday.

"NSW Health is communicating with that list of people," the school spokeswoman said. "They've been instructed to isolate and also be tested."

The school will be closed for deep cleaning before it is re-opened within two days.

The spokeswoman said NSW Health would also re-test the student, to confirm his positive diagnosis.

Another school student who was identified as a potential coronavirus case last week turned out to have returned a false positive test, NSW Health confirmed on Monday.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned parents to expect temporary school closures due to coronavirus cases as schools re-opened full-time this week.
