Victoria to allow gatherings of 20 people, NSW greenlights beauty services - SBS News

Victorian residents will soon be able to host up to 20 people at home, stay overnight away from their residence, and visit skate parks and playgrounds, but those who can are strongly encouraged to continue working from home for at least the next month to avoid a second wave of coronavirus.

From 1 June, permitted outdoor and at-home gatherings will be extended to 20 people (including residents) up from the five previously allowed. People will also be able to stay overnight at a private residence and booked accommodation.

Beauty and nail salons, spas and tattoo parlours will also be allowed to reopen from this date, in line with the 20-person limit, as will cafes, restaurants, pubs, galleries, museums, libraries, youth centres and community facilities. Bootcamps, religious services and real estate auctions can also expand to 20 people.

Weddings will also allow 20 guests, excluding the celebrant and the couple, while the number of mourners permitted at a funeral will increase to 50.

Playgrounds and skate parks will reopen on Tuesday, the same day students in prep, Year 1, 2, 11 and 12 are set to return to in-person teaching. All other students will return on 9 June.

Announcing the easing of restrictions on Sunday, Premier Daniel Andrews - who has been criticised by the federal government for his slow approach to reopening the economy - said his plan was to take a "slow, cautious, steady, graduated" approach.

"There are examples in other countries where they opened too much, too quickly, and now they have had to reintroduce even tougher rules, even harder lockdowns," he said.

"The real question is, why would you follow examples that have been proven to be a failure in other countries? You just wouldn't do that. So we are doing this in a careful and conscious way."

He strongly urged people that have been working from home to continue doing so for the entirety of June or risk having the state's progress on the outbreak "frittered away".

"It is inconvenient but it is a must. If we have everybody returning to business as usual in those indoor workplaces then we will just see this virus spread," Mr Andrews said.

Victoria recorded a net increase of one new case in the past 24 hours on Saturday, bringing their total number of confirmed cases to 1,603.

Of those, nine people remain in hospital including three in intensive care.

“Today’s increase in cases illustrates once again that while we have been flattening the curve, our battle against COVID-19 is far from over,” Victoria's chief health officer Brett Sutton said.

"Restrictions around some activities have now been eased in Victoria in recognition of the current low rate of community transmission of this virus."

Mr Andrews said the government would further relax restrictions from 22 June if community transmission of COVID-19 remained low. From that date, the government will consider reopening gyms and recreation facilities for 20 people at a time and allow up to 50 people in cinemas, theatres, restaurants, cafes, galleries, and museums.

NSW announces reopening of beauty services

Waxing, nail and tanning salons in New South Wales will be permitted to open from 1 June, with state health minister Brad Hazzard describing it as a "big day for women ... a big day for everyone".

Mr Hazzard said reopening these services has been one of the most common requests he has received during the coronavirus pandemic.

NSW Minister for Heath Brad Hazzard has announced a $5,000 fine for spitting and coughing on healthcare workers.

"I've even had text messages in the middle of other meetings, telling me how bad acrylic nails were. I didn't even know there was such a thing as acrylic nails, but I'm very pleased to say that they are now open," he said on Sunday.

Business owners will be required to have a COVID-safe plan in place before opening, he added, and adhere to social distancing restrictions, which mandate one customer per four square metres.

Sunday's announcement follows Premier Gladys Berejiklian's media conference on Friday during which she declared pubs, clubs and restaurants would be allowed to seat 50 patrons at one time from 1 June.

Overnight, NSW reported only one new case of COVID-19, taking the total number of confirmed infections to 3,087. But Mr Hazzard reiterated that there was no room for "complacency" going into flu season.

"I do fear that ... there may be some level of complacency that sneaks in, in the next few months, as we see these hopefully continuing low numbers, but it is so dangerous," he said. "It is so dangerous because this virus is deadly, we know that and we know we've had people die from it."

Community sport to restart in Queensland

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has cleared the way for community sport to restart in the state, announcing a $51.3 million Return to Play package on Sunday.

A portion of the funding will be made available to local clubs to allow them to purchase disinfectant and hand sanitiser for when matches restart as part of stage two of easing restrictions on 13 June.

Funding of up to $150 will also be made available to children whose parents have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis so they can return to sport.

"There will be some changes about how parents will observe the sport, but fundamentally it is about making sure that our young kids have the best opportunity," Ms Palaszczuk told reporters.

Grants of up to $20,000 will also be distributed to 3,000 local clubs around the state for the purposes of infrastructure, maintenance and equipment to "see them get back up and running for the remainder of 2020", sport minister Mick de Brenni said.

People in Australia must stay at least 1.5 metres away from others. Check your state’s restrictions on gathering limits. Testing for coronavirus is now widely available across Australia.
